Link-Up provides 3 different courses for our trainees in Link-Up 1,
World of Work - Towards Independence
Aim
To provide a framework of activities through which personal, social and independence skills can be developed and accredited for those with severe (SLD) and profound multiple Learning difficulties (PMLD).
- Age group - 16+ and adults
- Duration - 1 year 1 day a week.
- Level - Pre entry level
Towards Independence offers formal recognition for small steps in achievement towards longer goals, as modules can be used separately and accumulated to build up a record of personal achievements.
Contents - My Interests, Using I.C.T, Practical Skills, Experiencing the Workplace, Project (optional)
ASDAN Workright -
Aim
To provide a framework and documentation for candidates of all abilities for developing assessing and accrediting basic employment skills.
- Age Group 16 +
- Level - Pre entry through to entry level who may be able to quickly progress to complete the award.
- Duration 3 years 1 day a week.
Contents - Health and Safety in the Workplace, Being Responsible in the Workplace, Working with Others in the Workplace and You at Work
Volunteer's Award
Aim
To provide and prepare the student with a sound working practice to gain a Volunteer placement in the community.
- Age Group 16+
- Level- Entry level course which can be assessed by students at Link-Up after successfully completing the pre-entry ASDAN Workright at a level of 'no help'.
- Duration - 1 year over 2 days or 2 years over 1 day.
Contents - Prepare to be a volunteer, Your role as a volunteer, The next step and transferring your skills.
For all these courses there are other criteria that are taken into account when assessing the individuals including:
- Motivation and commitment to work ethos and the willingness to learn
- Able to behave appropriately towards self, colleagues, staff and visitors
- Motor skills suitable for the tasks required.
These courses are provided by Newbury College tutors at Link-Up once trainees have finished their college courses they may choose to remain on at Link-Up in Link-Up 2, which is purely work skills. Once trainees have moved into Link-Up 2, there is the possibility of working with a job coach to try work experience/tasters sessions in local businesses, another opportunity is to work with our joint tenants at The Slater Centre, the Community Furniture Project on a Open College Network course on furniture restoration, at the end of the course you will be in a position to volunteer at the community furniture project.
